European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) launched – ICOS data to be available through EOSC Portal

29 November 2018

The European Commission has officially launched the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) on the 23rd November 2018. The Cloud will provide a safe environment for researchers to store, analyse and re-use data for research, innovation and educational purposes.

The launch event in Vienna, Austria, also introduced new EOSC Portal, an entry point of the Cloud. The EOSC Portal is a universal entry point to the services, data and resources that researchers need to perform their science in a collaborative, open and cost-efficient way for the benefit of society and the public. The EOSC Portal is the first step towards the EOSC implementation, putting into practice the European Commission’s vision for Open Science. It brings convergence to a fragmented research ecosystem and fosters FAIR (‘Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Re-usable’) rules of participation.

ICOS will have its data products and services available through the EOSC Portal. From the Portal, users will be transparently referred to ICOS's own data portal, ICOS Carbon Portal, where the data can be accessed and visualised. ICOS is also developing community-based services, including on-demand computations of station footprints and dedicated Virtual Research Environments (VREs) that will allow users to interact with ICOS data products. These services will also be available through the EOSC Portal.

“The EOSC Portal will be a useful channel to expose ICOS data and ICOS services to our potential users, and for (ICOS) scientists to be able to find resources from other research and infrastructures and relate them to ICOS data”, says Alex Vermeulen, ICOS Carbon Portal Director.

The EOSC Portal is jointly developed and maintained by the eInfraCentral, EOSC-hub, EOSCpilot and OpenAIRE-Advance projects.
