The 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) will take place in Baku, Azerbaijan, from 11 to 22 November 2024. As an official Observer at the Conference of the Parties and a prominent European ground-based observation network, this year ICOS is participating in a side event co-organised by The Climate Centre, World Ocean Council and ICOS ERIC

Tuesday 12th November 16:45-18:15 (Side event 8)

Title: Carbon Dioxide Removal: Considerations for Responsible Deployment on Land and Ocean

Reaching net zero/negative requires deploying new and scaling current CO2 removal strategies. Governments must establish safeguards for communities & ecosystems. We will hear from experts on current CO2 removal policies & practice, new policies needed and other approaches for responsible deployment.

Speakers: Barry Vessar, The Climate Center; Jill Storey, World Ocean Council; Werner Kutsch, ICOS-ERIC; Louise Bedsworth, CLEE; Kurt Winter, Carbon Market Institute

Carbon Dioxide Removal needs scientifically rigorous monitoring, reporting and verification

Nature takes up carbon dioxide in its sinks, such as forests, soils and the ocean. For a carbon-neutral future to be realised, total human and natural emissions cannot exceed what sinks can absorb. We need to drastically reduce our greenhouse gas emissions to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. Carbon Dioxide Removal certification needs standardised scientific inputs to succeed.

ICOS provides almost real-time data on how nature responds to these reductions, which can be a powerful tool for informing which climate actions might be counterproductive.

The latest issue of FLUXES, the European Greenhouse Gas Bulletin, by ICOS – sheds light on an essential tool to help decision-makers assess progress towards a net zero world: science-based Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) systems.
