With ICOS Science Conference 2024 drawing closer, ICOS Head Office in Helsinki, Finland, is pleased to welcome Emma de Carvalho and Maikki Roiha to the Science Conference team as summer trainees!
Emma recently graduated from the Contemporary Societies Master's programme at the University of Helsinki. The opportunity to work with an environmental research infrastructure appealed to Emma: “My study track was Sociology and I also took courses on environmental anthropology and climate modeling,” says Emma. “I'm interested in working in social and environmental research.”
Emma has already been busy making preparations for ICOS Science Conference 2024. “I’ve been corresponding with presenters, attendees, and our colleagues in France,” Emma explains. “It’s important for us that the conference runs smoothly and that we are able to facilitate connections between people during the conference, so I am eager to be part of this.”
In June Maikki completed the Master’s programme for Teachers of Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry at the University of Helsinki, graduating with a chemistry and mathematics’ teacher’s degree in June. “I first heard about ICOS during my studies,” says Maikki. “I deeply appreciate ICOS as a producer of open-source data which I also have been working with in designing educational applications during my studies.”
So far, Maikki has been creating content for the ICOS Science Conference website and social media, contacting attendees and updating the conference programme. “It’s a nice balance between routine tasks and projects that require more creativity and problem-solving skills, which I really appreciate.”
Both Emma and Maikki are looking forward to the conference week to see the concrete outcomes of the work they’ve done this summer!
How do our summer trainees spend their free time?
Emma: “I like to go running and hiking. I'm also wanting to venture out on the water and go canoeing this summer!”
Maikki: “I am training karate. At home I like to annoy myself with crossword puzzles and disrupt my neighbours by strumming my father’s old guitar.”
