The ICOS Cities event 'Science meets City 2024' wasn't a typical conference. Held last week in Barcelona with online participation, it brought together a powerful force: nearly 75 city representatives and leading scientists, all united in the fight against climate change.
The focus was on harnessing the power of greenhouse gas monitoring for smarter climate action in cities. City representatives from a range of various urban environments came together, from e.g. Barcelona, Munich, Heraklion, Paris, Copenhagen, Rotterdam and Porto. They delved into critical questions: How can we ensure climate-conscious policies? How can observing greenhouse gas emissions help us track progress?
Renowned scientists fueled the conversation through thought-provoking talks and a lively panel discussion. The audience didn't just listen; they actively participated, posing questions and sharing their own challenges. The event wasn't all talk, though. Attendees got a glimpse of the future with newly developed prototypes for tools and services specifically designed to track city emissions and measure progress.
A talented graphic recording artist, Delphine Boghos, visually captured the day's discussions, transforming complex topics into clear illustrations.

The 'Science meets City 2024' event was organised by ICOS Cities, a European Horizon 2020 project, that brings together European policy makers and top scientists in co-designing pioneer greenhouse gas monitoring and services for cities to support climate action.
